Everything You Need to Know About BDS to Talk to Your Children and Grandchildren About Israel

February 22, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

A presentation/discussion focused on BDS. Presented by Deborah Hertz, Professor of History at UCSD and the Herman Wouk Chair in Modern Jewish Studies

The aim of the talk is to familiarize the wider Jewish community with the complex political climate to enhance conversations about Israel across the generations.

During the last decade, a Palestinian rights group called Boycott Divestment Sanctions has gathered some notoriety in liberal circles in the United States and Europe.  In this talk I recount the larger context of Palestinian diaspora politics in which the movement arose, and the conflict which ensued on many American universities and professional organizations regarding whether to adopt the BDS approach.  I concentrate on how Jewish American college students have reacted to the BDS challenge, and unravel what radicals mean when they use the term “intersectionality.”  A focus of the talk is to describe the “Jewish street” on campuses today, surveying groups such as Stand With Us, J Street, If Not Now, and Jewish Voice for Peace.
