Today’s Shabbat Musing: Faith in the Power of Rest.
Why do we have such a strange relationship with rest? Is it that we don’t have time for it? Do we feel lazy? Do we want to get the most out of life and so we say “no rest for the weary?” Do we feel guilty when we rest? Are we not as accomplished or impactful if we rest? What is it?
Obviously it’s going to be different for each one of us but I do think the common thread missing in all of them is faith. We can all agree that rest is good for our physical, mental, and emotional well being. So why then do we resist it? I think we don’t want to get thrown off course and we fear that if we rest we will do just that. Faith is knowing that you will get back on course if you want to.
Today’s faith lesson is simple. Take a break from whatever it was you were busy doing during the week. Watch less news (or no news), pause the social media posting and scrolling, take a break from heated conversations, stop cooking if you like. Just. Take. A. Break. And each of you know what that means for you. Take a break and when it’s over and you get back to the work you’re doing, remind yourself that you took a rest and are still here. So that the next time you rest, you have complete faith in its power. The power to refuel, recharge, and reengage.
Have a restful day. Love you!
