Pirkei Avot, Day 15

Education is important. Action is important. But without action, education remains stagnant.

Many of us love to learn. We educate ourselves on myriad of topics, we read books, we watch the news, we listen to podcasts. We’re informed. But what use is being informed if it doesn’t drive us to action? And by the way, you can fill in the blanks for what learning you’re doing and what actions can arise from it. It could be learning about flowers and then planting a garden. Or learning about the homeless situation in San Diego and looking for ways to contribute. Whatever it is, our learning must drive us to action. Not everything you learn will inspire you but when something does inspire you, don’t hold yourself back. Create, contribute to the world collaborative. Make a dent. And if you’re not sure what action to take, do anything. Start walking down that path and you will learn more than you ever did when you were just informed.

Disclaimer: There’s a book called “Big Magic” (highly recommend it) and it speaks to the notion that all of us have sparks of inspiration, of something we’d like to do or create, but so often we let that spark go out. This book and the message above are both about fanning the spark so that it’s light grows brighter and stronger.

So if you walk away with anything from this message it’s to fan the spark!

Love you all!

Gabi
